Austria’s Ice Cave

Amazing Eiriesenwelt in Werfen, Austria

One day a few years ago, we were in Salzburg, Austria with one free day and my son found an “ice cave” that was nearby so we gave it a try thinking it it was just a tiny tourist trap. How wrong we were : Eisriesenwelt ( https://www.eisriesenwelt.at/en/ ) in Werfen was quite amazing.

Getting to the gave entrance was an adventure by it self with a combination of uphills walk and cable cars.

On the way up, we could look down to the Burg Hohenwerfen that was the location of the classic movie “Where Eagles Dare”

Once we reached the mouth of the cave, we were divided into different groups depending on the language.

The guide led us to walk into the cave that is below zero centigrade. The concrete walkway are very easy to walk on yet very well concealed that they were mostly invisible.

Guide would point out the ice stalactite and stalagmite formation in different shapes, similar to limestone formations in most caves. We were not allowed to take pictures inside the cave but you can see them in the cave’s website.

Anyway, if you are in Salzburg, you should definitely visit this ice cave but you need to keep in mind that it is only open in the summer time (May to Oct) as in the winter, the road has too much snow.
